US Open 2024: Emma Navarro knocks out defending champion Coco Gauff, sets up QF meeting with Paula Badosa

In an All-American affair at Arthur Ashe Stadium, 12th-ranked Emma Navarro knocked out the defending champion, Coco Gauff from the 2024 US Open. Gauff, who was aiming to defend her US Open crown, had her moments in the match but Navarro had other plans apparently.

The 3-set thriller had its moments. Navarro started off by taking the first set 6-3. Gauff made a comeback in the 2nd set taking it 6-4, showing her ever-lasting fighting spirit and resilience. But Navarro proved too good for the defending champion eventually and took the set 6-4 and the match too.

Tough, error-filled day for Coco Gauff at 2024 US Open, joins the likes of Djokovic and Alcaraz on the way out

Emma Navarro was clearly the better player between the two Americans, but Coco Gauff had a rough day, to say the least. Gauff made 60 unforced errors and 19 double faults to make things harder than they already were. Navarro was quick to capitalize and broke Gauff’s serve 4 times.

Emma Navarro, who stormed into the quarterfinals of the US Open 2024, also got the better of Gauff in straight sets at the 2024 Wimbledon championships. She beat Gauff 6-3, 6-3 in the 4th round of Wimbledon 2024. Now out of the tournament, Gauff has become another star player to exit early in a US Open edition that has proved to be a graveyard for top-ranked players.

With top seeds like Elena Rybakina (out due to lower back injury), Maria Sakkari, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz already out of the tournament, Gauff has joined the list of players exiting early at this year’s US Open.

With a win over Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro is set to meet Spaniard Paula Badosa in the quarterfinal of the 2024 US Open. Badosa, who suffered a stress fracture in 2023, seems to be back in-form and raring to go. She also became the 4th woman (after Sanchez-Vicario, Conchita Martinez, and Carla Suarez) to reach the US Open Quarterfinals in the Open Era

Badosa is yet to face a seeded opponent at this year’s US Open whereas Navarro already has beaten 13th seed Marta Kostyuk and 3rd seed Coco Gauff.
